CASology Craft Space Tour: It's My Turn!

11.13.2015

Over at CASology, we've been giving everyone a peek into the design team members' craft spaces each week. This week, it's my turn!

Talk about a mad dash to clean things up!  With four craft loving children, I share my space and they have a way of covering every flat surface with their projects (must take after their mother...ahem.)!  I have had a variety of craft spaces over the years and it wasn't until we moved into our current home that my dream of having a craft space like this one became a reality.  My dear hubby helped me plan things out and together we came up with a simple layout that could serve a couple purposes other than just crafting.  Our basement is a work in progress, but my craft room and a bathroom are completed so far!

In our area, basement bars are popular.  We don't personally drink, but we wanted to have a bar in the basement for future resale if/when that time comes.  We decided my craft space would fit quite nicely in this room!  I tend to stand when I craft, so having a desk is not a top priority for me.  An island is perfect for this habit.  Plus, the kids can hop up on those bar stools and be close enough to supervise (& grab my supplies)!

As you enter the room, my faithful JetMax cubes (now a different brand at Michaels) reside on the right hand side.  The canvas photo you see is on dear hubby's honey do list to hang up one of these days.  I'm in the process of purging and reorganizing my craft space, so some of these drawers have very little in them right now.  As any crafter knows, however, that probably won't last too long.  I keep refills, wooden stamps, embossing powders, inspirational books, old Sizzix alphabet dies, binders for cling stamps, cards waiting for a home & a few old scrapbooking supplies in this area.  These are things that I don't need close to my workspace on a daily basis.

To the left, as you enter the room, is an armoire that has been with me for several years now.  It used to hold my crafting supplies, but now it holds the kids' craft supplies and my last few scrapbooking supplies (from before I went digital).  This seems to keep things fairly contained and it's an easy way to keep the mess from completely overtaking the room!

This is my workspace (notice the coffee pot?!):

Like in the kitchen, I prefer to have my most used supplies close at hand at all times.  The counter is an L-shaped one with cabinets and one drawer and then I have a Closet Maid cube storage unit under the window.

I have a thing for Closet Maid cubes.  They are such a practical way to organize and I have one of these in the laundry room too for storing each family members' winter gear (mittens, hats, etc.)!  Love these!!!  I keep my rhinestones and smaller embellishments in clear plastic jars on top.  This adds a pop of color to the room.  The buckets hold washi tape and newly acquired supplies.  The lower baskets need cleaned out because there are some stray items in those that I don't recognize!

To my right, as I stand in my workspace, there is another set of Closet Maid cubes which house the majority of my stamps.  These are alphabatized by manufacturer name.  I used some chalkboard bin labels to label each fabric bin with letters.  On top of the unit, I have my cardstock and Copic markers.  This space is actually designed for a refrigerator, but I'm happy to use it for other things!

Above the countertops are two cabinets.  The one on the left holds my sparkly, messy things such as glitter, spritzes & Stickles.  I also store my watercoloring supplies here.  The little buckets contain smaller tools such as sponge daubers, aqua painters, blender pens and the like.

The cabinet to the right contains stamps in dvd cases.  These are alphabetized also.  See a trend here?!  Below the cabinets are my ink pads.  I like to keep those closeby and within arm's reach.

Under the sink, I keep my bigger, often used tools such as paper cutters & a Scor Pal.  A pan organizer helps keep these in order.  I also have paper towels and cups here for messes and little treats when the kids are crafting with me.  I also keep spare dvd cases in a metal bin to remind me that I need to get my Paper Trey stamps organized.

Right now, my Paper Trey clear sets are in their original packaging and my next project is to get them all into dvd cases, labeled and put in alphabetic order by name!  I keep these in the lazy susan that is in the lower cabinets.

On the lower shelf, I keep extra buckets.  I personally love buckets for organizing and will often grab one for odd and end items that need a home.  I also use them for stamp sets that are currently being used for design team work.

To the right of the lazy susan is a lower cabinet which holds my die cutting supplies & embossing folders.  I also have a little bin of cardstock scraps.

The one drawer above this cabinet holds the crafting supplies & tools that I use most every time I craft.

As you can see, I keep scissors, Wink of Stella pens, adhesive and acrylic stamp blocks here.  These are organized with drawer organizers.  I like these to be easy to grab and easy to put away.

That wraps up my craft space tour!  In the future, I'll share more details about what I've used to organize my supplies, but I'm still in the process of organizing everything since moving into the room.  It all takes time and I don't often know how I'm going to organize certain things until I've used a room for a while.

I hope I've at least provided a little inspiration for you.  I like to have my supplies out of sight and a clean craft space so I can start fresh each time I walk in the room!

Have a fabulous Friday!

To Everything a Place: Week 4 - The Kitchen Pantry

9.21.2013

Since I didn't get much organizing done this week due to lack of time and energy, I thought I'd share with you the before and after photos of the pantry makeover that we did last summer!  Our biggest problems?  The original shelves were too deep!  I spent a lot of time digging for what I needed!  In order to organize things like we wanted to, we needed more shelves and the area on the right side was pretty much wasted space to us as we only used it to store our vacuum and broom!

BEFORE
The vacuum was relocated, everything was taken out (Yes, the kitchen was quite something that day!) and DH went to work measuring, cutting shelving boards and installing them.  The end result?  A pantry that looks like this:

AFTER
Since then, we haven't really changed anything!  It's worked out very well!  The shelf just above the folding chairs is now a shelf with kids' activity types of things on it and I'm loving having those things so easily accessible for rainy day kitchen play!  There are three white plastic bins on the left side (just above the bottled water) that hold potatoes, onions and garlic, three frequently used ingredients in our house!  These bins I found at Bed, Bath and Beyond.  This project is one that I was so happy to have done!

It's on into a new week.  Hopefully, one without any new respiratory bugs.  All but DH and DD came down with colds and coughs last week.  Thus, the lack of energy on my part to tackle too much in the organizing department or down in my craft room!  Onward and forward!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

To Everything a Place: Week 3 - Kids' Closet

9.14.2013

Believe it or not, I'm back for a third week in a row with a little more organizing done!

Kids' Bedroom Closet

This has been bugging me for a looooong time now.  Every time I'd walk into their room, I'd cringe opening the closet doors!  Maybe this will help you understand why:

Outgrown clothes piled on the floor.  Their stash of "treasures" thrown haphazardly here and there.  Toys stuffed in whatever available spot they could find.  A hamper with a lid that never stays on.  A shoe organizer that is really only half full of shoes and shoes that are outgrown or worn once a week!  A crazy closet, to say the least!  One that needed some TLC before the boys get any older and I realize they haven't learned how to keep a closet clean!  That's a scary thought when I think of any future wives that could be in the picture someday!  Eek!

I worked on taking most everything out and sorting through it, purging broken, unloved toys and just grouping like things with like things!  That in itself was a job!  Here's what I was able to get done this week:

The details:

1.  A weekly organizer for clothes.  They love it and so do I!  I help them choose and fold outfits for the school week and then we put them in the appropriate slots.  This has eliminated one step in the nightly bedtime routine!  Bonus!

2.  Fabric bins for the top shelf (ClosetMaid brand from Target) for less frequently used things such as Leapster components, swimming clothes, sweatshirts/sweatpants, audio books, etc.  I plan to label these with tags.

3.  Clothes organized by colored hangers.  Their school and church clothes are hanging on the top closet rod on blue hangers.  Their play clothes are on the bottom closet rod on white hangers.  I will put their shirts on hangers down in the laundry room while folding laundry and they will be responsible for taking them to their room and hanging them in the appropriate places.  A few less trips up the stairs for me!  Another bonus!

4.  Old jeans on a shelf for weekends and visits to the grandparents' farm.  Their school jeans are folded in their dresser across the room, but this may change as they do still have room on the lower closet shelf!  I'm just a bit hesitant to do so as I am envisioning the two getting mixed eventually if stored in the same area.

5.  Step stool for reaching those fabric bins so little monkeys don't feel they have to climb anymore.

6.  Future:  Bookshelves installed by DH inside the closet to the left.  They have a good collection of books, some of which I have designated for donation.  Other things could be stored there temporarily also such as outgrown or seasonal clothes.

I still need to put the outgrown clothes into plastic storage totes and sort through a couple small collections of miscellaneous little items I found buried in the original mess, but I feel like I don't have to close my eyes and hold my breath when I open the closet doors anymore!  I'm sure guests will appreciate it too since this is currently our guest room!

Enjoy your weekend!

To Everything a Place: Week 2 - Lego

9.07.2013

Wow. This week as I was trying to decide where to go with this decluttering/organization project, I found myself getting a bit overwhelmed by all the possibilities!  I finally took a deep breath and thought, "Use it or lose it!"  I will start each project with this mantra.  Everything must be used fairly often or it must leave!

What did we work on this week?  Something I seem to have a love/hate relationship with...

LEGO

As anyone with little boys knows, Lego is an inevitable part of childhood.  In our house, DS2 is the Lego collector and DS1 gladly plays along whenever they decide Lego is the activity of the day.  I had stashed the growing collection on a shelf in the kitchen pantry, but it was becoming an eyesore for me, especially when they took them out and played in the kitchen!  After moving all my craft supplies out of the little room off the kitchen (except the cabinet seen on the right in the photo below), I decided the room would be theirs for a while (It's actually to be a future mudroom.)!  Problem was...

...it looked like this most of the time!  It's a good thing there is a door that closes!

I had DS2 sort through this mess, bagging up sets.  He got the job done eventually!

I purchased some Sterilite organizers at Target and the bagged sets will go into these and labeled when I get a chance next week.  The nice thing is, these organizers fit onto a simple bookshelf that we've had forever!

See the binder in the above photo?  I organized all their instruction manuals into a binder using sheet protectors and dividers!

I put all the boxes that the sets came in quietly in the recycle bin.  DS2 has held onto them for much too long and they take up a lot of room!

This is what the room looks like today:

Now I have another idea brewing for the little table and the nook it sets in!  I'm thinking this little room could serve as a great homework area too!  That's a project for another week, though!

Enjoy your weekend!

To Everything a Place: Week 1 - The Craft Room

8.31.2013

With summer quietly preparing to make its exit and autumn subtly attempting to sneak onto the stage, I can't help but bring my focus indoors a bit more lately! Summer break is so fun and spontaneous! I just love the more relaxed routine of summer (yes, we still have a simple one just for sanity's sake), but by the time school starts and autumn draws nearer, I find myself looking at things in a different light! It's amazing just how crazy the house seems to become during those three short months!  I'm not talking about the people in it (although, that is probably questionable in our case...)!  I'm thinking more about the disarray now found in rooms, closets, etc!  Every September, I make a new list of indoor projects to work on as the weather cools.  This time, I'm making it a point to work on decluttering and organizing!

That said, I'm going to work on one project per week.  Each project may or may not get completed in a week's time, but it will be worked on at least!  Progress, not perfection, right?  I hope you'll join me as I attempt to tackle these projects over the next few months!  Who doesn't like before and after photos?!

Let's get started!  First up...

THE CRAFT ROOM (First things first, ya know!):
The larger work table in the room...filled!
The kids' crafting supplies...and some stray toys.
I was in the middle of purging and organizing cardstock the week DD made her arrival and the photos above show what things looked like when I walked back into it after she came home!  Not a very mojo encouraging sight, is it?!  I about turned around and walked back out, but the desire to create luckily overcame the desire to flee.

I should mention that prior to DD's arrival and early in the pregnancy, I decided to move most all of my crafting things to an unfinished basement room, more specifically, what is to be a guest room someday.  At one time, we'd thought it would be my craft room in the finished basement, but our plans have changed since then.

This is what my "new" rustic crafting space looks like as of this week:
This is the bulk of my craft supplies!

My little homemade work desk is on the left - two Closet Maid units back to back!

A larger work table shared with the boys

The kids' art supplies reorganized a bit

So there you have it.  My desperate attempt to tidy things up a bit, hoping it will inspire some fresh creativity!  I like things to look fairly uniform and tidy in a room, thus, the Jetmax cubes.  I have been happy with them over the years.  Now I'm saving up for a few more Stamp N Storage pieces.

Someday...this is to be my future corner of the basement with the little window you see in the photo being enlarged to the size of the masking tape outline:

For now, I'm creating away in my rustic room, realizing I'm just lucky to have a space to designate as a creative space!

I'd love to take a peek at your creative spaces, so leave a link to your photos &/or blog in the comments and I'll come visit!  I love to see other crafter's ideas!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Perfect Match

2.22.2013

Digital media, video tape and media storage at TapeOnline.com

I've been in an organizing mood this week.  Clearing clutter.  Organizing what's left.  While searching for yet another solution to my clear stamp storage woes, I came across a raving review by Becca (Amazing Paper Grace) of some jewel cases over at tapeonline.com.  I decided to give yet another suggestion a try and ordered a few.  That was easy at only 88 cents each!

For some time now, I've had this idea that I want all my clear stamps stored in the same size containers (preferably dvd type cases), easily accessible and pleasant to look at because I like to see my stamp sets or I am likely to forget what I own!  I have stored my clear sets in clear CD cases in a drawer for some time now, but can't say I've been very happy with that method.  Ever since Stampin' Up! started packaging their cling stamps in the dvd style cases, I've been hooked.  I guess I just like how much roomier they are and that they look nice all lined up in a row on a shelf!

Needless to say, I am very excited about this new clear case!  Why?  Because they seem to be the perfect match for my Paper Trey clear sets!

The paper insert for the Paper Trey set fits perfectly into the front tabs on the inner part of the case!  At this point, I am keeping the plastic sheet that comes in the original package as a buffer between the insert and the stamps as I'm not sure how the clear stamps will be nestled up against the paper of the insert.  Time will tell.

I can slide the coordinating die into the front and the case closes perfectly fine!

How slick is that to have the set and the die all in one place?!
Yes, I'm in love.  Now I'm off to continue organizing!  It's much easier when there's excitement involved!

Have a fantastic Friday!

Taming the Beast (a.k.a. Craft Hobby)

10.01.2012

(can't for the life of me find the source!)
A new week.  Whew!  Last week sure went out with a bang for me!  I don't believe I want to clean out my craft room again for a very long time.  Half way through it, I really did feel like I needed some sort of super powers to get through it!  Yikes!  I discovered I have quite the addiction to fondness for decorative paper and it's time to tame that addiction fondness and get my collection back under control!  Good grief!  Here I thought stamps were going to be the challenge in the whole reorganizing process and, while they were somewhat of a challenge, the paper seems to be my one big weakness!  I think I'm going to be shopping my stash a little more wholeheartedly from now on!  Moderation!

Since I've been taking inventory of my craft supplies, I haven't taken much time to stamp anything.  I stamped one clean & simple card yesterday, but that's for tomorrow.  For today, I'll share with you some more photos of my organization project & then see if the day provides opportunity for some stamping time!  I know you are probably as curious as I am when other people let me take a peek at their craft rooms!  I know mine is rather small, but it's amazing what you can do with one this size!

Here, Ladies & Gentlemen, is my newly decluttered and reorganized craft room:

As you can see, my favorite color combination (red & aqua) are part of my decor.  A few grey & black accents are added here and there, as you'll soon see.  I know I said I was eliminating the work desk I had in the previous arrangement, but after working on a card I decided that wasn't such a great idea.  I like a little room to spread out.  I did downsize the desk & made it out of two 2x3 ClosetMaid cube shelves instead of the 3x3 ones I'd originally had and that seems to give the room enough breathing room.  The three fabric bins contain most of my stamp stash (my SU stamps are in one side of the wardrobe).  I still need to find a good way to organize my clear and cling stamps!

Here is my work area (left side of the room):

The little white shelf needs to be mounted on the wall yet, but the buckets contain the tools I tend to use most every time I stamp.  My ink pads are close by and my most used punches are above those (see my "craft studio" tab above for a picture).

Here are all my JetMax cubes & cardstock:

The majority of my decorative paper is in the white file under the cardstock trays.  The rest I had to put into two fabric shopping bags for now.  Sigh...

I have my white, kraft and SU In Color cardstocks stored vertically within reach of my work table as these are cardstocks I like to keep separate from the other colors.

I decided to keep my Project Life album, the refills and a few other albums that I work on from time to time out where I can see them (& be reminded to work on them):

My Cricut Create, a red box (wonder what's in it?!) and Project Life file are on top of the JetMax cubes:

The colored buckets on and hanging from the white shelf contain my lesser used, but need-to-be-accessible tools.  One contains my rainy day fund!

That red box...

...contains my embossing folders.  I wanted something fun and found this miniature red trunk at Hobby Lobby at half price!  All my folders fit with room to spare!  Love it!

Behind the door (on the left before you get to the work table) are the rest of my ClosetMaid cubes, stacked on top of each other.  These fabric bins are my embellishments, etc. organized by color.  The basket contains my overflowing 6x6 paper pads and the two other spots contain a few magazines, books and catalogs I regularly use for inspiration.

Above these cubes is a shelf/drawer unit where I have put my lesser used (but want to keep) books and magazines.  The three little drawers contain cards I have made.  These are organized by subject (thank you, birthday, wedding, etc.)

My Copic markers are hiding out on the other side of the navy album, up out of the reach of my three boys!

Finally, I really wanted to get a dry erase calendar back up on the wall to keep a visual of upcoming events and deadlines.  This is just to the left of my work table & I will use the small lower portion for little things I find that inspire me.

Whew!  That's enough!  Don't even ask what is inside the wardrobe because that is another project for another week in the future!  Right now, I'm itching to stamp something!

Have a marvelous Monday!
