Prickley Pear Masculine Birthday

Monday has arrived again and it's time for more Prickley Pear inspiration!  This week, I wanted to make a simple, one layer birthday design.  Using one of the new classic car images in the store, I created a masculine card.

Stamps:  Prickley Pear (Ambulance, Circles Set Sentiments Clear Set - sentiment)

I used Soft Suede ink from SU as I love how it looks on kraft cardstock!  This card is so simple, but perfect for those men in your life who prefer to-the-point greetings without a lot of extra fluff!

If you haven't already, you'll want to go check out the new release in the store!  I don't know about you, but I'm ready for spring and the new release is full of spring themed images!

I hope you had a good weekend!  Mine was filled with a visit from family which meant lots of cousin fun for the kids!  There really is nothing like cousins when you're a child!  The giggling, the games, the noise...good times!

Crisp

This time of year has me dreaming of apples and all the desserts that one can create with them!  A childhood favorite of mine is apple crisp!  Of course, then there is the classic apple pie that comes to mind!  Every Thanksgiving, DH and I bake a few pies and apple is always requested.

This week's cue word over at CASology is a fun one and you'll see by the creations of the design team and our guest designer that there are quite a few ways to intepret it!

What did I think of?  Laundry.  Must have something to do with the amount that is going through our house right now!  A fresh, crisp shirt represented this cue word in my mind!

I stamped and cut out the shirt before popping it up with a foam dot for dimension.  I stamped the sentiment to align with the shirt's orientation and then added a small cluster of start gemstones.

A Musical Monday

Well, here I am.  Two weeks have already flown by since DD was born and I'm realizing again just how quickly little ones grow up.  Sigh.

I'm sure you've had quite enough of the photos of a particular newborn, so I figured I'd better get back to the regularly scheduled program a bit here on the blog!  (Only grandparents can get away with showing you such photos for weeks on end!)  Believe me, DD is going to grow up knowing full well that her mother is basically a paparazza!

I spent a little time in my craft room over the weekend and it felt so great to do a little creating again!  I made a musical themed card to go along with the Clean & Simple Challenge over at Splitcoast Stampers.  We are to CASE hskelly's wonderful cards this week!  I chose to CASE this card.

Paper:  SU cardstock (Basic Black, Very Vanilla), SU decorative paper

Accessories:  Crystal Effects, foam dots, Nestabilities (circle), music note die, SU square punch (for making sentiment banner)

I figured this could be a masculine birthday card given its monochromatic color scheme and the lack of an abundance of bling!  I did add a little shine to the music notes with Crystal Effects.  The sentiment banner was made by yours truly as I realized I didn't have a banner die that was big enough to stretch over the center circle!  Of course, maybe I really do have one that size, but time is of essence these days and I wasn't wanting to spend a whole lot of it digging through my stash when I could easily make one with a strip of cardstock and a square punch!  The beauty of creativity, I tell you!

It's off to DD's 2-week check up today and another blood test to double check her bilirubin levels.  We were able to take her off the bili blanket Friday evening, so hoping she'll keep stable from here on out!  So happy to be snuggling with her without the extra weight and bulk of the blanket!

Masculine Monday: Blue

After a busy company-filled ending to last week, it was so relaxing to spend a little time in my craft room Saturday afternoon!  Amazingly, my mojo actually agreed to cooperate!

A somewhat masculine card evolved when I was playing along with this week's photo inspiration challenge on Splitcoast Stampers' Clean & Simple thread.

Stamps:  Paper Trey (sentiment)
Paper:  Paper Trey cardstock (kraft), SU cardstock (Pacific Point)
Ink:  SU (Elegant Eggplant), Memento (Tuxedo Black)
Accessories:  Nestabilities (heart), Spica Copic marker (black), woodgrain embossing folder, foam dots, scoring tool

I embossed the woodgrain pattern on the center panel and then lightly scored two lines to divide the panel into thirds.  I then die cut the heart out of the center of the panel.  I die cut another heart out of blue cardstock and sponged purple ink onto it to give it a little character.  I stamped the sentiment and then traced over it with a black Spica pen to add a little sparkle.  I popped up the main panel and then glued the blue heart down to the card base to fill the negative space.

This week is the beginning of swimming lessons for DS1 and DS2.  We'll see how this goes!  DS1 is less than enthused even though he had them last year and survived.  DS2 is enthused as of now, but will see what he says after his first lesson this morning!  I never cared for swimming lessons as a girl (was even scared of the water), so feel myself dreading this, but being very careful not to show my feelings and crossing my fingers the two of them will have a positive experience!  Knowing how to swim is such an important life skill!

Masculine Monday: Robotic

For today's masculine card, I decided to be a kid at heart and create something for a younger male!  It seems like I never have any birthday cards for boys on hand, so maybe this will be the start of a little stash for me!

I came across a little trio of robot stamps while searching through my stash and realized they had never experienced a dip in any kind of ink, so thought I'd let one of them cross that off his bucket list!  I wanted the little robot to be a little shiny, so stamped him on some of Stampin' Up!'s Brushed Silver cardstock and cut him out.  I added a tiny little gemstone to the top of his antenna.  I stamped the single line of chevron using silver ink and then added the sentiment in black.  I popped up the robot with foam dots after the blue glitter glue had dried.  The stars I added just for fun!  Now I just have to wait for a little boy to have a birthday!

 

Cheryl over at the A.R.T. Card Challenge gave me a heads up to enter this in their current masculine card challenge, so I'm linking this up!  I love discovering new challenges out there in the virtual world!

The weekend proved to be a fairly relaxing one despite deciding to clean out one half of our unfinished basement.  DH's parents are coming for a couple nights later in the week and my father-in-love enjoys helping with home projects!  We figured we'd better have a plan and something for him to work on!  He's a big help and great motivation for DH!  I can't wait to see what they get done!

Masculine Monday: A Directional Birthday

I'm off to a slow start today and am simply blaming it on Monday! Monday takes the blame for a lot things, doesn't it?!

I whipped up a quick birthday card this morning while the house was still fairly quiet.  It's so nice to start the day with a little quiet time, especially when energy is dragging!

Ink:  SU (Gumball Green, Pacific Point), Memento (Tuxedo Black)

I stamped the arrow border, inking the two rows of arrows in different colors.  The sentiment was stamped three times and then black gemstones were added as embellishments.  Simple as that!

We're still recovering from our Michigan vacation.  It always seems to take a few days to catch up on sleep and energy!  We had a wonderful time away!  We found some sweet cherries to pick, plenty of sand and waves to explore and I was even able to convince DH to stop and let me pick up a few fresh, handmade chocolate truffles...pure indulgence!  I shared.  I promise.

Masculine Monday: Keep Pedaling

Is it Monday again?!  I guess that means I need to share a masculine card that I made for a family friend's 72nd birthday!

Ink:  SU (Real Red, Chocolate Chip, Night of Navy), Memento (Tuxedo Black)

I'd had this 5x5 card base setting on my work table for a couple days, complete with the border stamp image in the middle.  I grabbed it when I realized it was a navy pattern...perfect for a masculine card!  This particular friend has always been active and, up until last year, was able to run for exercise!  Since a knee replacement, he purchased a new bike (much more stylish than this one, of course) and has taken up more biking.  His favorite color happens to be red and he & his wife were once the owners of a cute pup that he still talks about from time to time.  I was able to include these favorites into his card, thanks to a bicycle set from Paper Trey!

The bicycle and puppy were die cut, stamped and assembled fairly easily and then popped up with foam dots over the border strip.  I added black gemstones to the center of the wheels.  The inside simply says, "keep pedaling."

DH spent most of Saturday working on the bathroom installation in the basement and then took the older two boys biking.  Yesterday, we spent a good portion of the day with several friends from our church.  We have a new couple that has two boys close in age to two of ours, so we got to spend a little time with them when the rest of the group had gone home.  So fun and, I must say, little boys are pretty amusing to watch!

Masculine Monday: HB2U

Monday is dawning filled with sunshine and the sound of song birds filling the air.  A wonderful way to start the day!

I hope you had a nice Father's Day weekend.  We spent Sunday just relaxing.  DH took the older two boys "mountain" biking while DS3 took his nap, so I had some unexpected quiet time that included a little nap and simply enjoying the pure silence in the house!

I whipped up a clean & simple masculine card at some point during the weekend.  Saturday was spent tidying up the house after the first full week of summer break with the boys!  It's amazing how much more quickly things become disheveled when everyone is home all day, every day!  I'm thinking I need to be better with daily maintenance over the next few months!  Whew!

This card was so simple, but after staring at it for a while, I decided I do kind of like it.  Masculine cards are supposed to be fairly simple in design and not overly embellished, right?!  I think this should fit the bill!  I stamped the HB2U, die cut the music note and popped it up with some foam dot remnants.  I added the tiny gemstones simply because I couldn't resist adding something!

We're off for a walk this morning while the air is still morning fresh and the temperatures are mild.

Masculine Monday: A Spec-tacular Father's Day

Happy Monday!  With Father's Day less than a week away, I took some time to focus on the upcoming holiday by making one final card.  This time, I went with some newspaper print decorative paper and a stamped pair of spectacles!  I don't know about you, but many Sunday afternoons growing up, I'd find my father sitting in his easy chair reading the Sunday newspaper.

I stamped the spectacles and sentiment.  Then, they were fussy cut and snazzed up with a little Crystal Effects for shine.  I then popped them up with foam dots for dimension.  Easy as ever!

I hope you had a relaxing weekend!  Me...not so much.  DS3 took a fall and smacked one of his top front teeth on the bookcase in the living room Saturday afternoon.  Of course, such things always happen on the weekend when doctors and dentists are not in their offices.  Thankfully, I work for a kind dentist who took my call and advised me what to do.  We'll need to try to get an x-ray early this week to see if DS3 can keep his tooth as it was pushed into his gums a bit and could affect the developing adult tooth if it was pushed in enough to touch it.  This mommy is feeling a bit distressed about it all!  Thankfully, the swelling in his face is beginning to subside little by little now.  That, in itself, relieves some of the worry.  A little.

Masculine Monday: A Hairy Situation

Happy Monday!  I hope you had a good weekend!  DH made it home safely from his weeklong business trip to Canada on Saturday, so all is well!  It's during times when he's away that I find myself admiring single mothers!  A lot.  It's not that I feel so overwhelmed, but I just feel rather exhausted by the end of the week!  Evenings become a little too quiet after the boys are tucked in and I really start missing conversations with the love of my life!

Ever since last week's "Furry" cue word challenge over at CASology, I've been thinking about mustaches and the lack of them in my stamp collection!  While paying Hobby Lobby a visit on Friday, I found a cute little background stamp that made me smile!  Not only was it too cute to pass up, but it was half off!  Can't beat that now, can you?!

Unfortunately, my ability to get a good stamped image is not very good with background stamps (...a little fact I conveniently forgot in that moment of retail therapy excitement.), so you'll have to excuse the unintended weathered look that I achieved.  As if that wasn't enough, the fresh breeze coming in the kitchen window the evening after I finished the card blew my hard work into a pan soaking in the sink and I quickly became the proud owner of a bunch of water logged mustaches!  Guess Mother Nature must know I really don't like the things in real life.  sigh.  No need to worry about any prospective recipient noticing the faults of my creation!  Whew.  Funny how things work out, isn't it?!  'Course, here I am sharing this with all of you, the stamping experts...

I framed the poorly stamped images with some black cardstock and popped up the layered panels with foam dots after stamping the sentiment.  The heart gemstone is actually a clear one colored with a Copic Marker.

It's back to the drawing board to create another Father's Day card!  One down (see here).  Two to go!

Masculine Monday: Automobile Missing

Things are still in full swing with grandparents today! It's amazing just how gifted grandparents are at wearing out their grandchildren! DS2 took a 3-hour nap on Saturday! That is something he very rarely does anymore, especially on a day other than Sunday! I'm quite sure grandchildren are very adept at wearing out their grandparents too, though! Good days!

I created today's card to stick in the mailbox when these special grandparents start for home tomorrow!

Masculine Monday: Good Ole Dad

Ah, Monday!  A new week has begun!  While I did indeed do some more painting in the kitchen Saturday (Someone please remind me next time that kitchens are a lot of tedious detail work...), I took some sanity time in my craft room and created not one, but three cards that I'll be sharing on different days throughout the week!  I made sure I made a masculine card as I wanted to be on time today with that weekly promise!

Since Mother's Day has now come and gone, my mind seems to automatically start thinking about Father's Day!

I stamped a strip of dots to ground my design.  I then stamped the car image on SU's Brushed Silver cardstock and cut it out, popping it up on top of the dots.  I stamped a simple sentiment and added clear gemstones to the headlights just for fun.  You can probably guess what the inside says!

DS3 and I will be running errands this morning since the day is starting off with a chilly greeting.  Once groceries are put away, it will be back to painting for me!

The grey and yellow are going as well as that red window panel!  The grey was there when we bought the home, as was the red decor, but it's time for a change!  The majority of the trim work is done, so that is good!  The paint rolling goes a lot faster and DH hopes to get home from work a little earlier than usual today, so that will help!

Testosterone Tuesday: Black & White

Due to not feeling well the second half of yesterday and a lack of planning on my part, I am posting my weekly masculine card today! (Hey, I'm only one day late this time!)

I've had this set from Sweet Stamp Shop setting out in my craft room for a few weeks now just begging me to use it!  I purchased it because it reminded me of my childhood days and visiting my grandparents' home where they had one of these fantastic view finder toys:

We had so much fun clicking through the images on the little cards!  Now our boys have one, thanks to those very same grandparents a few years ago at birthday time.

The sentiment continues inside and says, "you are a genius!"  How's that for a testosterone booster?!  I decided to use a black and white color scheme this time, giving this almost a sketched look.  With an engineer husband, this just reminded me of something some guys might appreciate:  colorless design.  I added some subtle touches just to jazz it up a bit as I am a woman, after all.  I applied a little Crystal Effects to the film pieces to make things a bit more realistic and then added a single black gemstone to the center of the wheel for some extra dimension.  I popped up the entire circle with foam dots.  Here is a close up view:

I'm off to enjoy yet another beautiful spring day!  The sun is shining and it's supposed to reach the upper 70's for temperatures!  The backyard needs mowing and I'm itching to paint something again.  This time?  The kitchen.  Yes, the nursery was finished a day after I posted the before photo here on the blog, but you get to wait until I have a few more decorations in place before I share the after photos.  I'm happy with the paint, so that's good!

Masculine Monday (on Thursday)

I apologize.  My computer posting lately has been rather disorganized!  DH was away on a week long business trip overseas and while he was away, I encountered a computer glitch that caused some frustration until he got home.  I am not into fixing computer issues!  Thank goodness for a hubby who takes them all in stride and has things up and running normally again!

This week's Masculine Monday card is extremely simple!  I simply stamped a graphic image in a masculine color on kraft cardstock and then popped up a basic sentiment on top of it!  You could choose any simple sentiment you needed for this design!

A Change of Scenery

I'm not seeing much green around me these days. The trees and plants are not waking up very quickly, but I really can't blame them.  It's in the 30's again this morning.  I decided I'd just create something with bright, beautiful green to get by until the landscape awakens!  Shouldn't be long now!

While cleaning out my craft room again (one of those never-ending tasks that is very similar to picking up after your children), I discovered some stencils that have been in my stash for several months.  I honestly need to go through my things more often because, really, it's like visiting a candy store or pastry shop without having to pay a dime!  I'll take a little bit of everything, please!

I masked off the banner strip and then stenciled the circles in SU's Gumball Green ink.  After staring at it for a while, I decided to define the borders a bit more using a Midnight Muse marker, simply drawing the lines with the assistance of my trusty ole ruler.  I stamped the simple sentiment in Midnight Muse and then added a touch of clear Stickles to a few of the dots.  I think this might just qualify for a masculine birthday card, don't you think?!

I'm digging my heels in to paint the nursery.  I am painting over the navy blue accent wall that the previous home owners left behind.  I didn't mind the blue since we've had all boys so far and blue happens to be my favorite color, but it's time for a fresh coat of paint!  For me, that usually means a new color too and I do happen to have a pretty good excuse this time!  Here is a photo of the starting point...

 



Currently, it's totally a boys' room, but that's about to change.  I have my main color scheme chosen, I found a zero VOC latex paint (safe for those of us that are with child), the windows are open, the birds are singing in the trees and I'm ready to tackle this!  Wish me luck!

Flying Hi

I have not forgotten my promise to share a masculine card on Mondays.  I promise!  This week and last, my plate of Life has been filled a bit more with the bare essentials and lacking a bit in dessert (a.k.a. crafty endeavors)!  I'm okay with it, though, because that's just life...sometimes I'd rather have my plate full of dessert, but that's not exactly healthy.  Balance and moderation!  I know I savor the little extras a lot more when they aren't as readily available!

We have paper airplanes flying around the house like you wouldn't believe these days!  I remember the days when I joined my three brothers in such play except I had this tendency to make my own paper airplanes look pretty!  I probably spent more time decorating them than I did actually flying them!

For this card, I embossed the main white panel and layered it on top of some light blue.  I then stamped and fussy cut the paper airplane, popping it up with a foam dot for dimension.  The sentiment and flight path were stamped in black right on the main panel.  I added the heart gemstone after coloring it with a red Copic marker.  Another card for DH!

Today was a nice spring day with temperatures finally reaching into the upper 60's!  I'm hoping the next few days will prompt the bare trees to start getting serious about leafing out!  I am so ready for green leaves!  Some of the neighbors have mowed their lawns for the first time and I have a feeling this coming weekend we may finally do the same!  Is there anything quite like the smell of freshly mowed grass?!

Masculine Monday: Dreamcycle Love

After a weekend of birthday fun with family, I'm trying to shift gears back to the daily routine!  I realized today was the day to share a masculine card and almost panicked!  Almost.

A couple years ago, DH decided to purchase an older, used bicycle to ride to work.  He figured that if he rode something inexpensive and not too pretty to look at he wouldn't feel so bad if something happened to it!  (I secretly think he wanted something that actually has a comfortable seat.)  One of his co-workers named it for him...the Dreamcycle.  A name which I happen to find rather humorous, yet fitting.

Since we've been getting some family walks and bike rides in along with the arrival of a few spring-like temperatures, I couldn't help but think a bicycle might just be fitting for a masculine card this week!

I love to keep my masculine cards toned down, both in color and embellishments.  On this particular card, I chose to use kraft cardstock and only black ink.  I added just a tiny bit of color and sparkle with a punched out heart, popping it up with a foam dot.  I do believe this may be finding its way into his suitcase when he heads out on his next business trip!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!  We awakened to the sound of rain this morning, but the sun is now trying to brighten the skies.  With temperatures reaching the upper 60's later today, I think we're in for a rather nice spring day!

Masculine Monday: Happy Birthday!

In keeping with my promise to share a masculine card every Monday, I'm here with one I created over the weekend for my guest designer spot on this week's Clean & Simple Challenge over at Splitcoast Stampers.  We're to try our hand at the Chalkboard Technique!

Ink:  SU (Whisper White), Memento (Tuxedo Black)
Paper:  SU cardstock (Basic Gray, Marina Mist)
Accessories:  silver pearls, foam dots, chalk

I stamped different sized circles in Whisper White ink, chalking over them with a bluish color to match the Marina Mist cardstock.  I then added the simple sentiment and three silver pearls.  I popped up the layered center panel with some foam dots for dimension and I was done!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!  We ended up taking a spontaneous family trip Friday into Saturday.  It was absolutely beautiful weather Friday, so we headed to a zoo not far from us and then spent the night in a motel so the boys could go swimming!  It's been much too long since we had a chance to do those things!  Now onward and forward into the new week!

Masculine Monday: Circles

Over the weekend, I decided I need to create more masculine cards on a regular basis.  Thus, most Mondays here on the blog will showcase masculine themed cards.  For me, masculine and sympathy cards are two types that I shy away from.  I'm going to challenge myself this year to stop dragging my feet and make a conscious effort to create more of these!  Hopefully, at least some of my attempts will be an inspiration to you!

For today's card, I CASE'd a card (gotta start somewhere, don't I?!) from the Featured Stamper Challenge over at Splitcoast Stampers.  This is the card I CASE'd (by jentimko).  I changed out the white card base and bright, cheery colors for a kraft card base and masculine colors.

Stamps:  SU (Fabulous Phrases)
Ink:  SU (Not Quite Navy)
Paper:  Paper Trey cardstock (Kraft), Echo Park DP (Times & Seasons), SU CS (Lucky Limeade, Early Espresso)
Accessories:  SU button, misc. twine, SU jewelry tag punch, SU circle punches, foam dots, embossing folder

I used various sized circle punches to punch out a mix of circles.  These were glued and layered on top of a panel of kraft cardstock and then run through my Cuttlebug with an embossing folder.  I used some basic twine and a corduroy button to keep things masculine.

It's Tuesday and time for a brand new cue word over at CASology!

With little boys in the house, this one should have come easily for me, but, alas, I didn't have that "perfect" image I was dreaming of for my original idea!  I'll have to keep working on that one.  I did, however, find a space themed set in my stash of neglected purchases and inked it up to create a space themed card!  Given that I completely spaced a boy child's birthday recently (no, not a child of my own!!), I think this card will be rather appropriate!

Cardstock:  SU (Gumball Green, Brushed Silver), Paper Trey (white)
Accessories:  green gemstones, foam dot

I had such fun cutting out the UFO from silver cardstock and adding those green gemstones!  (It really doesn't take much to amuse me!)  I added a little dimension by popping it up with a foam dot.  The rest was easy!
